Here’s What We Learned

researchers.jpg

(Editor’s note: If you have some problems accessing the site this week, our apologies. We’re officially switching the servers and there may be some minor issues.)

Readers,

First of all, thank you a thousand times to all the readers who filled out our survey. It was surprisingly fun to watch the numbers fill up over time, and to see your responses and feedback to the site.

We crunched all the numbers and thought we’d share some of the stats with you so you’ll know who your fellow readers are.

You are more likely to have a penis: 54% of our readers are male and 46% are female. I hope this disparity has nothing to do with this.

88% of you are aged 18-34. These numbers are a little vague…in future polls we’ll break that age group down a little more.

You are very well-educated: 27% are currently in college, 45% already have their bachelor’s degree, and 16% earned a Master’s degree or higher.

You all give 110% in your daily lives.

Most of you are not in New England: Only ten percent of respondents hail from the 12 states from Maryland to Maine and East of “The Cleve”. The highest number of respondents from individual states were California (10%), Oregon and Texas (8%), Tennessee (7%), and Washington, Pennsylvania and Ohio (4% each).

4% of you reside in that peaceful and friendly neighbor to our North. You’ll never find a hackneyed Canadian joke on this site. We love our neighbours (with a ‘u’)!

Most of you want to see more Humor on the site, but you’re also looking for more book reviews, social justice articles and general articles. 5% of you said Burnside was “Perfect the way it is”. We’re leery of brown-nosers, but we appreciate the compliment just the same.

Here were some of the highlights from pollster comments:

“For my money, you can’t beat nudity.” We couldn’t agree more.

“Don should actually write on BWC some. I’m guessing he’s a busy guy but, c’mon. I think we all want to hear from him more.” We would love to hear more from Don, too, but he is very, very, very busy, and has very little time to write articles. Occasionally, he throws something our way, but we don’t hold our breaths.

“Can’t you guys change your font/text software so that quotation marks, dashes, and other characters show up the way they should instead of some kind of crazy stuff like @#$%#$%?” This is something we know we need to improve. We’re working on it.

These aren’t the only suggestions we’re following…many of you had some excellent feedback that we’ll try and put into practice as the site expands. One of my favorite ideas was to develop a way for Burnside readers to connect and share what they’ve been doing in their community. Once again, thank you for reading.

Burnside is now on a new server. And I had no clue I gave 110% in my daily life.

I'm actually at work right now, and I too am uncertain of your figures. I'm ignoring the phone to type this... and think I'm really only giving about 109%. If even that...

Man, I didn't even turn up for the poll, so there was a huge lack of any effort whatsoever from me.

Also I don't fall into any of those 'where in the world am I?' categories as I am from New Zealand. For those of you who are still saying, "Where?", it's a little country of just over 4 million near Australia, BUT NOT PART OF AUSTRALIA! (Sorry about the slight over-reaction there). Basically, if you have seen the Lord of the Rings Trilogy or the first in the Narnia series of films, you have seen New Zealand, cos they were filmed here. And if you haven't seen either...then WHY NOT?
So, I guess what I have been trying to say is don't forget about the rest of us.
Are there any more of us out there?

Oh...and by the way...British 'Office' is WAY funnier than American version. Harsh, but true.

Yes, Sarne, we have a few international readers. There are goodly number of Canadian readers. And we also got a few responses from Asia and, yes, the South Pacific.
