I’ve Got a Fever, And The Only Prescription…Is More World Cup!

hanginthere.jpg

Readers,

Getting up at 5:30 am for the last week is beginning to take its toll. My eyes are bleary and the left has begun to twitch involuntarily.

But all of it paid off a few days ago.

The Oregonian ran a front page article on Portlanders and the World Cup. You can read the article here, and the picture on the cover was of my two best friends, John and Steve, sitting at the Moon and Sixpence pub in Northeast Portland, groaning in agony at another lost chance for the United States Soccer team.

I missed the front page. An old guy sat in front of me.

Still, it’s not every day that your friends grace the cover of “The Voice of the Northwest Since 1850”.

Besides getting up early to watch soccer, The Burnside Writer’s Collective is entering exciting times. Don and I are opening a modest office on East Burnside. We bought some office furniture today. We are hoping to find a nicely-framed poster with a cat hanging with one paw from a tree limb and the caption “Hang in There!” underneath. Please let us know if you’ve got a bead on one. That poster is hilarious!

The office will allow us to tackle our many projects. Be on the lookout for a DVD featuring a reading and interview with Don soon at our online store. We’ll also have audio files for you to download, and a podcast is in the works. There’s more. Much, much more. But it’s too early to tell you what we’ve got in mind.

In the meantime, we hope you’ll enjoy our new issue. Brent Bourgeois is back with an article on The Network of Spiritual Progressives, Chad Gibbs has written another incredible piece on the Dixie Chicks, and Aaron Donley, the Jack Handey of Generation X, returns with More Bits of Life. We’ve also got reviews of new novels from Douglas Coupland and Philip Roth. Penny talks about Al Gore’s movie, An Inconvenient Truth, in the social justice section.

Just a quick, unpaid-for endorsement: if you’re looking for a great source of news, we recommend picking up a copy of The Economist. Whenever I fly, I buy a copy and I’m always amazed at how I end up reading it cover to cover. Check it out if you get a chance.

Also, if you want to check out a stunning slide show on how architecture can affect cancer patients, click here.

The articles in this magazine are based almost solely on open submissions, and we are always looking for new reviews or articles to post. In terms of what we’re looking for, reading the site and getting a feel for the articles is your best bet. If you are an aspiring writer or just have an album or book you want to review, please send it to us at reviews@burnsidewriterscollective.com.

Thanks so much for reading, everyone.

P.S. If you’re a fantasy football fan, we’re opened a Burnside Writer’s Collective League at Yahoo! Sports. There are 18 open spots and a Live Online Draft on the 23rd of July. Our league ID number is 26354 and our password is “burnside”.
