The Greatest Band of All Time
This is number two of our poll series. Last issue, readers claimed U2’s Achtung Baby as the best U2 album of all time, an upset over Joshua Tree.
Our lastest question was, what is the best band of all time? I didn’t qualify the question enough…should the lists pertain to solo musicians? But our readers fought through the confusion, and they’ve come up with the top ten bands ever.
Here’s the list, along with the occasional comment:
1. U2 - Not a surprise
2. The Beatles - “I can’t remember if it is cool to like the Beatles now or not, but they are my favorite. I cried they day John Lennon was shot, of course I was a baby and cried every day, but still.”
3. Radiohead
4. Wilco
5. R.E.M. - “I am definitely a snob for the earlier stuff…pre-Orange.”
6. The Police - Apparently, we’ve got some Gen-X readers…
7. Over the Rhine - “‘Changes Come’ may be the best Christian song with the f-word ever written.”
8. Sufjan Stevens
9. The Dave Matthews Band
T-10. Rolling Stones, Coldplay and Belle & Sebastian - Belle & Sebastian was the biggest surprise…they are pictured above.
Honorable Mention: Bob Dylan and The Band. I think Bobby D would’ve been higher if I’d been a little more clear in the guidelines. I’ll try not to make the mistake again.
I’m happy with that top four…those would’ve been my picks, as well, though not necessarily in that order.
This issue, I wrote a review of the new television season, and Trisha Hubbs discussed the idea of television as a whole. We want to know, from our readers, what the best television shows of all time are. You can go back as far as you like: “Leave It To Beaver”, “M*A*S*H*”…anything. Send your top 5 television shows, with a brief comment if you’d like, to reviews@burnsidewriterscollective.com, and the results will be posted in our next issue.
Thanks for voting, everyone!

Wow...NONE of my picks made it to the top 10. Suppose I shouldn't be surprised there. There probably aren't as many fans of the London Symphony Orchestra like me in the world...

I don't enjoy these kinds of lists, at least it terms of setting a definite #1-10. Oh, I can tell you my Top Ten favorite bands, but I don't order them in any way. I just don't think it's fair or feasible. Thus, here's a list of the bands/singers/artists/songwriters/whatever that I think are absolutely the Tops in Music History. Note: This list doesn't include anyone whose entire catalog has only been released in the years 2000-2006. Bands/Artists of this type haven't been around long enough to deserve a spot on this roster. Yes, that does mean you Chris Martin. You too Ben Gibbard.
Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, U2, R.E.M., The Smiths, Morrissey, Wilco, Radiohead, The Beatles, Starflyer 59, Joy Electric, The Cure, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, V.O.L., Allison Krauss, Patty Griffin, Lucinda Williams, Patsy Kline, Beach Boys, Pedro The Lion, Fugazi, Joy Division, Marvin Gaye, Al Green, Mike Knott, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Zao, and I'm sure that there are others that I can't think of right now.
