The Greatest U2 Album of All Time
The votes have been tallied, the detritus is in. We recognize that a love of music does not necessarily annoint one with a love of U2, and vice versa. Additionally, any request for a ‘favorite album’ must instantly call to mind ex-lovers, road trips and soundtracked gallivanting unique to the individual listener. Thus said, we present the results of our readers poll on a conditional basis. In other words, there is room for rebuttal here, which we welcome:
1. Achtung Baby
2. Joshua Tree
3. War
4. Pop
5. Zooropa
6. All That You Can’t Leave Behind
7. Rattle and Hum
8. Unforgettable Fire
9. How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb
10. Boy
11. Under a Blood Red Sky
12. October
So that’s it, and BWC can’t argue with the results. Pop’s result was a huge surprise…that album was a critical disaster for U2, but many of us believe it is highly underrated. In my opinion, Zooropa is the second best album U2 has ever released behind Joshua Tree, and I want to note that either voters didn’t include Zooropa at all, or had it in their top two. A polarizing album, I guess, but check out “The First Time” if you’re on the fence.
For our next poll, we want to know your five favorite bands of all time. They can be of any era, just send your ordered list to reviews@burnsidewriterscollective.com.

Come on! obviously the only people who voted was the 80's generation. No, im not trying to deny that Achtung Baby was a great album, i mean weren't all U2 albums? But i thought that it was basically common knowledge that Joshua Tree no matter how over rated, is certainly the best album hands down. Also, All That You Can't Leave Behind, is way too low on that list, and Rattle and Hum is the single most underated album ever! Pop, please. Zooropa, yeah its good but it has no where near the ingenuity of All that you can't Leave Behind, or the amazing live preformances with the Beatles covers/John Lennon tributes (God pt. II) of Rattle and Hum contains. October: does no one have respect for songs other than the greatest hits? Did any real fans vote on this? Look i dont want ot slam those who idd im simply trying to make a point.

i didn't vote but i am a huge u2 fan. the final standings are not too bad. i would have put the top three as achtung baby, joshua tree, and pop. pop is my favorite album because of its lyrics and its experimentalism, but jt and ab were just different at the time they were released.
i like the new albums atyclb and htdaab but they are are really not that great musically and some of the songs lyrics are lacking. i think wild honey and that man and woman song are two of the worst u2 songs ever written. i hope the next album is not more of the same. and whats with this new best of they are coming out with?

I think voters assumed Joshua Tree would be number one, so they wanted to advocate for one of their other favorites. Most critics consider Joshua Tree to be one of the top 20 albums of all time, let alone from U2.
I agree with Jonathan's analysis: the last two albums have been lukewarm, especially Atomic Bomb. He's also right about those two songs...they are some of the worst songs out of this band I can remember.

It's tough to rate U2 for me. I love their music and, because I'm just a little younger than Bono, I've come of age with them... sort of.
I used to think I would be a musician in the way those four guys from Dublin have been. I've even had a couple of dreams that I somehow wound up playing as part of the band. But, it turns out that my thing is raising a family. Just as sweet. I have screaming fans, and I still rock out with my kids in the garage.
I love U2's last two albums. Really nice work. The Edge shines vocally as well as instrumentally. I would really love to hear him lead vocally more often. And, my kids really like U2. My son Nate, who plays drums, loves watching live DVDs of them.
For these reasons, I love that you ran a "best of" poll.

Finally, somebody got it right. I'm a hardcore U2 fan and sick to my back teeth of everyone praising the Joshua Tree at the expense of Achtung Baby. Better songs, better musicianship, more lyrical depth and a rock album instead of a loud folk album. Moreover, it reinvented U2 at a time when people were getting sick of their War through JT era image. The flag waving crusader came out as a grinning, winking, swaggering lounge lizard, forcing everyone to ditch preconceived notions of who Bono and U2. If they had come out with "The Joshua Tree 2" in 1991, U2 would have become The Grateful Dead of our generation, instead of our Beatles. And Achtung Baby is their Sgt. Pepper's.

In response to the first comment here, no I don't think that The Joshua Tree was their greatest album ever. It has a batch of good songs on it and great playing but they were trying way to hard towards the end of that album to stuff away any of their true influences.
And I think that's why the triumvirate of "Achtung Baby", "Zooropa", and "Pop" really work because they were playing the kind of music that they grew up listening to: '70s techno pop from Germany, Irish punk, and glam rock from England.
And, I used to listen to "Rattle and Hum" a lot when I was younger, but nowadays it sounds bloated and ridiculous.
